Agora Gallery, New
York, NY press release, 2005:
Notable for her vibrant colors and remarkable
talent in the watercolor medium, Alicia Sotomayor paints the flowers and
palm fronds, coconuts and seaside scenes from her native Puerto Rico.
In
a style of realism that captures the vivid tropical light of Puerto Rico,
Sotomayor describes in her art every subtle nuance of color found in nature,
from the bold hues of the flora to the delicate colors of shadow and the
shimmering reflections on the surface of water. While her representation
of plant life is intricately detailed and realistic, Sotomayor sometimes
allows the paint to bleed and blend in a fluid, diaphanous atmosphere of
color.
Some of her pieces have underlying narratives and others, she says,
are simply drawn from themes centered around Puerto Rico, images representative
of the region's extraordinary natural beauty. Sotomayor studied oil painting
at the School of Art of the Instituto de Cultura in Old San Juan, and later
taught herself to paint using watercolors. She has exhibited her work in
numerous shows in Puerto Rico, and been published in many magazines, newspapers
and websites.
